Merge fields put each person's own details into the subject, the preview line and any text block. Every one can carry a fallback for people you do not have the detail for.

Write the fallback after the bar, up to 60 characters. Values are always shown as text, never as code.
Check who has a name
Personalisation lists the fields this campaign uses and, if it uses a name, how many of the people it goes to have no name on file and will see the fallback. Each field has a Copy button.
