A folder holds a message in one place; a label marks it, and a message can carry several. Labels belong to the mailbox: everyone who can read it sees them, and mail apps that show keywords see them too.

Label a message

  1. Step 1: Open the message and press l, or choose Label (the tag) in the toolbar over it. In the list, Label is also among the actions when you hover a message, and in the toolbar when several are selected.
  2. Step 2: Type to find a label and press Enter, or tick it. A label already on some of the selected messages shows a dash; ticking it puts it on all of them.
  3. Step 3: To make a new one, type its name and choose Create, or press Enter. It is made and added at once.

Each change shows Undo for a few seconds. Labels show as small coloured pills on the message in the list and beside its subject; the × on a pill over the message takes that label off.

See a label's mail

Choose the label under Labels in the left pane. The list shows the messages carrying it in the Inbox; the menu in its heading, In Inbox, looks in another folder instead. Searching while a label is open searches only what carries it.

Manage labels

  1. Step 1: Open Mail settings, then Labels, or Manage labels at the foot of the label picker.
  2. Step 2: Under New label, choose a colour from the dot, type a name, and Add label.
  3. Step 3: Choose a name to rename it in place; Enter saves and Esc cancels. Choose its dot for another colour.
  4. Step 4: Delete takes the label off every message, in every folder. Undo puts it back on them.
